đ Feeling Volcano â Emotional Regulation Chart for Kids
Description:
The Feeling Volcano is a fun and visual tool that helps children understand and manage their emotions using the analogy of a volcano. Just like a volcano builds up pressure before it erupts, our feelings can also grow stronger if we donât recognize and express them early. This chart guides kids to identify how theyâre feeling â from calm at the base to angry at the eruption â encouraging emotional awareness and self-regulation.
How It Works:
Level 1 â Calm (Green): The volcano is peaceful. You feel relaxed, happy, and in control.
Level 2 â Sad or Tired (Blue): The first rumblings appear. You might feel low energy or a bit down.
Level 3 â Frustrated (Yellow): The lava is rising. Youâre upset or annoyed and need a strategy to cool down.
Level 4 â Angry (Red): The volcano erupts! Youâre overwhelmed with anger and need a safe space or calming tool.
How to Use It:
1. Check In Daily: Encourage kids to point to or circle how theyâre feeling.
2. Talk About Emotions: Discuss what might have led to that feeling and what could help move back to calm.
3. Use as a Classroom or Home Tool: Perfect for morning routines, counselling sessions, or emotional learning activities.
4. Teach Regulation Strategies: Pair each level with coping actions (deep breathing, taking a break, talking to someone).
Why It Works:
Using a volcano as a metaphor makes emotions concrete and easy to visualise. Kids learn that feelings build up like lava â and that recognising them early can prevent an emotional âeruption.â This helps develop emotional intelligence, empathy, and self-control.
Ideal For:
Teachers and school counsellors
Parents supporting emotional learning
Therapists or psychologists working with children
